School District Administrators will present their 2010-2011 budget recommendations to the School Board on March 15 at SHS Library at 7:00pm. If you are unable to attend, the recommendations will be posted here on Tuesday, March 16.

Shorewood School District, like so many around our state, is faced with the question how do we continue to provide high quality education with less financial resources? After steadily make changes to improve efficiency and effectiveness over the last 5 years, the district is taking the next logical step and analyzing the possibility of reconfiguring services. This year, the Shorewood School District is studying the possibility of grade reorganization.

The School District of Shorewood strives to provide academic and extra-curricular programming in areas that promote high achievement and performance to meet community expectations. We seek to develop students who are critical thinkers, problem solvers, and empathic listeners who advocate for their opinion, exhibit strong positive character, and who are engaged in the world around them. An election will be held on April 6 to elect two School Board members. Candidates running for the School Board are John Carlton (inc.), Colin Plese and Rob Reinhoffer. Linda Jacobi has withdrawn from the election. The seats are currently held by Carlton and long-time Board Member, Nancy Bornstein who has chosen not to run again.

There is still an opportunity to learn more about the candidates: Shorewood Men’s Club Hosts a School Board Candidate Forum, March 3 at 7pm at Hubbard Park Lodge.  All are welcome to join the Men’s Club for dinner (starting at 6:30) and the forum (starting around 7:00). Please call 332-5999 to reserve a dinner which is $17 payable at the door. Hubbard Park Lodge is located at 3565 N. Morris Blvd.

Given our constant and on-going safety concerns for our students, the School District wants to make sure that parents are aware of an incident that occured in our community on January 28, 2010.

Congratulations to SHS 2003 graduate Maryam Choudhury! Her illustration was the cover of  the Sunday, December 20, New York Times’ Arts & Leisure "Year in the Arts" section. The School District of Shorewood is excited to share that our two Solar Electric Systems were commissioned by WE Energies on Friday at Shorewood Intermediate School (SIS). Two systems, a 12.54KW roof mounted photo voltaic system and a smaller 2.24KW system were installed this summer. Both systems are expected to produce 18,391 kWh annually. The second system will be used as a demonstration system and as an educational tool for students and community members.

The School District of Shorewood is pleased to share that five high school seniors have been chosen as Semifinalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to Nathaniel Froiland, Taylor Lipo-Zovic, Hallie Sanders, Maya Volodarskaya, and Margaret Wallace! The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. Also, congratulations to Jonas Yela who received commended status.  

Going forwrad, the Shorewood Health Department will offer H1N1 influenza vaccinations by appointment in their office. 

Through assemblies and a service project, the School District of Shorewood celebrates the contributions our men and women in the Untied States Armed Forces have made to our country. Atwater Elementary, Lake Bluff Elementary and Shorewood Intermediate Schools will have special Veterans Day assemblies to acknowledge all who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Relatives and friends of students and staff will be in attendance as guests of honor.

In conjunction with the Veterans Day celebrations, the schools are hosting a service project – A Dollar for Honor. Each school’s goal is to raise $500 so that each school can send one veteran to Washington DC to see his/her national memorial through the Honor Flight program.

Work on the Athletic Field is essentlally completed for this year.  Renovation of theSHS Physical Education Building is underway.
